{"id":237,"date":"2019-11-22T15:02:25","date_gmt":"2019-11-22T15:02:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=237"},"modified":"2019-11-27T19:28:32","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T19:28:32","slug":"richard-lindley-a-tribute-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=237","title":{"rendered":"Richard Lindley \u2013 A tribute"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Richard Lindley the former ITN and BBC Panorama reporter died earlier this month.&nbsp; His Panorama colleague Michael Cockerell remembers him.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard\nLindley was that apparent contradiction in terms: a gentleman journalist.&nbsp;&nbsp; Throughout a long career he always behaved\nhonourably.&nbsp;&nbsp; That didn\u2019t mean that if\nyou were competing with him on a story, he would be a soft touch &#8212; far from\nit.&nbsp; He was a tough, wily and resourceful\nreporter. But he never stooped to conquer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One vivid instance\nof this came in 1971 in the Indo-Pakistan war which created Bangladesh. Richard,\nthen a top ITN reporter, &nbsp;went to a stadium\nin Dacca to film Abdul Sadiqui the victorious guerrilla leader in the war against\nPakistan rule.&nbsp; As Sadiqui roused the\ncrowds, at his feet lay a number of \u2018traitors\u2019 bound head and foot, who were\nbeing kicked and punched.&nbsp; Lindley\u2019s was\nthe only camera team there and he knew had an exclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he\nfeared the team\u2019s presence was egging on the attackers and that the prisoners\nwould be beaten to death \u2013 which is what was to happen. &nbsp;&nbsp;But Richard was no longer there; he had decided\nto pull his team out in the hope of saving the prisoners\u2019 lives, by calming the\ncrowd. &nbsp;Not many war reporters would have\nbeen deliberately prepared to miss such a dramatic piece of footage<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was lucky enough\nto share an office with him on Pamorama for many years,&nbsp; He had come to the programme from ITN&nbsp; in 1973&#8211; after a decade reporting wars in\nVietnam, the Middle East and Africa.&nbsp; He\ncut a stylish figure \u2013 tall and dapper, the product of Cambridge and National\nService in Malaya, as a Lieutenant in the Royal Hampshire Regiment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard had\na stellar career at Panorama, mainly as a film reporter but sometimes as its\npresenter.&nbsp; His films on location would\nget up the noses of sundry strongmen including Idi Amin of Uganda, the Shah of\nIran, and Saddam Hussein, who had never before been interviewed by a Western\nreporter.&nbsp; \u2018Saddam was just like all the\npictures of Uncle Joe Stalin\u2019, Richard told me: \u2018He was full of\nsmiles and charm. And he had a gang of little kids running around for him.\u2019&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2019\/11\/22150108\/Richard-Lindlay-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2019\/11\/22150108\/Richard-Lindlay-980x653.jpg 980w, https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2019\/11\/22150108\/Richard-Lindlay-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1024px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When President\nReagan invaded the former British colony of Grenada in the Caribbean, much to Mrs\nThatcher\u2019s fury,&nbsp; Richard was immediately\non to the story.&nbsp; Thanks to what he\ndescribed as \u2018the unscrupulous determination\u2019 of his producer David Wickham,\nPanorama managed to get into Grenada that was now policed by US marines.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With\nhundreds of journalists searching the Island for black Marxists &#8211; the pretext\nfor the invasion &#8211; Richard talked his way into Government House and did an\nexclusive interview with the&nbsp; British\ngovernor General Sir Paul Scoon, who badmouthed the Americans. &nbsp;\u2018It was a mini-scoop\u2019, said Richard,&nbsp; \u2018and best of all &#8211; we had upstaged BBC News\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On another occasion Richard went secretly to film dissidents in Communist Russia.\u00a0 The only way he could get in was to pose as a tourist couple along with his feisty young producer, Lorraine Heggessy, on an official Intourist trip. To aid credibity, they pretended to be engaged were to share a hotel bedroom.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard told\nme: \u2018To preserve the Panorama decencies I supervised Lorraine\u2019s purchase of an\nall- enveloping, passion-killing, Victorian-style night gown from Laura\nAshley.&nbsp; Lorraine didn\u2019t like it\u2019.&nbsp;&nbsp; Each day after the official tour ended, the\ncouple would sneak out of their hotel and interview dissidents, who had been contacted\nsecretly in advance.&nbsp; It made a riveting\nprogramme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard was\nan incisive interviewer and, as a reporter, had a fine turn of phrase.&nbsp; He began a profile of the Labour supporting\nmillionaire industrialist Peter Parker with the line:&nbsp; \u2018The kingdom of Socialism has many mansions \u2013\nand Sir Peter Parker owns three of them.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was\nalways a supportive and generous colleague. And he had a great gift for friendship:\nhe was Godfather to one my daughters. &nbsp;He\nnever forgot her birthday and when she reached the big one O, took her to tea\nat the Ritz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He would\nalways celebrate his own birthdays by indulging his passion for old Hollywood\nmusic and dance movies.&nbsp; He would lay on\na lunch for his many friends and then he would show on the big screen in full\nglorious Technicolor films like his favourite \u2018Seven Brides for Seven Brothers\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His own love\nlife mirrored a Hollywood movie, when he met the social networker Carole Stone\nat the Edinburgh TV festival, twenty five years ago. They fell madly in love\nand had a famously happy marriage. After they both took singing lessons the\nhighlight of their regular parties would be the romantic duet between Carole\nand Richard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"460\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2019\/11\/22151532\/richard-and-carole.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2019\/11\/22151532\/richard-and-carole.jpg 460w, https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2019\/11\/22151532\/richard-and-carole-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2019\/11\/22151532\/richard-and-carole-400x250.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 460px) 100vw, 460px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his later\nlife Richard\u2019s extensive charitable work on health and housing brought him an\nMBE.&nbsp; He also wrote two books.&nbsp; The first was a candid and entertaining\nhistory of Panorama, \u2018Fifty years of Passion and Paranoia\u2019.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He followed\nit with the story of ITN\u2019s News at Ten, which Andrew Marr described as \u2018the\nwork of a good reporter, who sniffs out controversy, homes in on the sensitive\nareas, and leaves no word unminced and no vital phrase mumbled\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As well as\nhis professionalism, Richard was the most loyal of friends.&nbsp; He was always the first to ring or text\ncongratulation if he thought I had made a good programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I feared for Richard when I last saw him in hospital three weeks ago and we parted with a manly hug.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He died on 6 November and is survived by his wife, daughter Joanna, son Tom and four grandchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard\u2019s\nfuneral will be at St Martin-in-the-Fields,\nTrafalgar Square, on Wednesday 11<sup> <\/sup>December at 11am. &nbsp;The Vicar Revd Dr Sam Wells will lead the\nService.&nbsp;&nbsp; All those who knew\nRichard are welcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Award-winning documentary maker\nMichael Cockerell worked as a reporter on Panorama with Richard Lindley,<\/em><em><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Richard Lindley the former ITN and BBC Panorama reporter died earlier this month.&nbsp; His Panorama colleague Michael Cockerell remembers him.
