{"id":1233,"date":"2025-08-01T10:25:10","date_gmt":"2025-08-01T09:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1233"},"modified":"2026-02-05T10:43:20","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T10:43:20","slug":"hugh-cudlipp-student-award-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1233","title":{"rendered":"Hugh Cudlipp Student Award 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">The Hugh Cudlipp Student Award 2025 has been won for a series of journalistic pieces that were described as \u00a0\u201clife- changing, life- saving\u201d work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Sharon Browne-Peter<\/strong>, a student journalist from News Associates, won the prestigious award for her body of work focused on sickle cell disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">A sufferer of the disease herself, Browne-Peter wrote three compelling pieces pressing for more Black blood donors and raising awareness for a lifesaving cause, as well as a documentary for which she was the director, producer, and researcher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Caroline Waterston<\/strong>, editor-in-chief of\u00a0<em>The Mirror<\/em>, presented the award, adding that Browne-Peter\u2019s submission was \u201clife changing, lifesaving work combined with great storytelling\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">Browne-Peter\u2019s work appeared in CNN, The Floor Magazine, and The Voice.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1234\" style=\"width: 759px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1234\" class=\"wp-image-1234\" src=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2025\/08\/01102159\/VOGA9773-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"749\" height=\"638\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1234\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sharon Browne-Peter receives her award from Caroline Waterston, Editor in Chief of the Mirror. Photo credit: Ian Vogler<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">The Hugh Cudlipp award \u2013 supported by\u00a0<em><strong>The Mirror\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>and the\u00a0<strong>London Press Club<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 took place at a special evening event this week. The award is named after Lord Hugh Cudlipp, a former editor and editorial director of the Mirror Group, and a past president of the London Press Club.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">Lord Cudlipp was a pioneer of 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century popular tabloid journalism. The award in his name is dedicated to recognising outstanding journalistic work by editorial students, with recipients being awarded a \u00a31,000 prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Sophie O\u2019Sullivan<\/strong>\u00a0of City St George\u2019s University received a highly commended award for her documentary on Billingsgate Market. The documentary \u201cbeautifully captured not just market life, but a way of life under threat,\u201d said Waterston.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">Amongst the dozens of entries, two commended prizes were also awarded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Sapphire Hope<\/strong>, another News Associates student, was praised for her piece in the Financial Times about the hardships of disabled jobseekers, inspired by her sister who has disabilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\">The piece highlighted injustices faced by graduate jobseekers with disabilities, with the investigative piece including multiple moving interviews.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Paul Wilkinson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Fabienne Dias<\/strong>\u00a0of City St George\u2019s University were commended for their project on migration, which included relevant themes explored in depth, varied viewpoints, and touching testimonies from asylum seekers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_x_MsoNormal x_last-child\">The award ceremony was followed by the annual Lord Cudlipp lecture, given this year by\u00a0<strong>Ayesha Hazarika<\/strong>, former\u00a0<em>Evening Standard<\/em>\u00a0journalist and now life peer in the House of Lords.<\/p>\n<p>The event was covered by the Standard. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/student-wins-hugh-cudlipp-student-journalism-award-sickle-cell-disease-b1240592.html\">Click here<\/a> to read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hugh Cudlipp Student Award 2025 has been won for a series of journalistic pieces that were described as \u00a0\u201clife- changing, life- saving\u201d work.
