{"id":1163,"date":"2024-12-13T11:18:07","date_gmt":"2024-12-13T11:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1163"},"modified":"2025-07-29T12:02:52","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T11:02:52","slug":"digital-media-needs-the-rigour-of-traditional-old-school-print-to-combat-fake-news-says-new-journalist-laureate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1163","title":{"rendered":"Digital media needs the rigour of traditional old-school print to combat \u2018fake news\u2019, says new Journalist Laureate"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>And still \u2018nothing beats a good story well told\u2019 \u2013 whatever the medium, says former MailOnline executive editor Ian Walker as London Press Club Ball raises \u00a325,000 for journalistic good causes<\/h2>\n<p>Online media must embrace the old school rigour of print journalism to combat the growing menace of \u2018fake news\u2019, says the UK\u2019s new Journalist Laureate.<\/p>\n<p>In the fast-paced digital age and with the advance of AI, the journalistic basics of accuracy, fact-checking and balance remain paramount \u2013 along with the eternal truth that \u2018nothing beats a good story\u2019, said Fleet Street legend and recently retired <strong>MailOnline executive editor Ian Walker<\/strong> as he received the prestigious Journalist Laureate honour at the <strong>London Press Club Ball<\/strong>. \u2018The key qualities of print journalism cannot be lost,\u2019 he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>The annual accolade, which honours excellence in journalism, was awarded to Walker to celebrate a career spanning more than 50 years of a \u2018brilliant news man of the old school\u2019,\u00a0 \u2018a journalist\u2019s journalist\u2019 and \u2018a titan of journalism.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Hosted by the <strong>London Press Club<\/strong>\u00a0in conjunction with sponsorship partners <strong>St James\u2019s House (SJH) (<a href=\"https:\/\/stjamess.org\/\">https:\/\/stjamess.org\/<\/a>)<\/strong>, the Laureate presentation was the highlight of the invitation-only London Press Club\u00a0 Ball held at Grosvenor House in London\u2019s Park Lane, which also raised \u00a325,000 for good causes linked to journalism, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Presented with a specially inscribed Laureate\u2019s Visconti pen, Walker told more than 500 leading media guests and sponsors: \u2018We are living and working in a particularly challenging time for journalists. More and more stories are being published via digital media. That brings with it relentless pressure to produce more content at an ever-faster pace, but that should not compromise accuracy and fairness.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Against the growing threat of \u2018fake news\u2019, he stressed: <strong>\u2018The key qualities of print journalism cannot be lost<\/strong>. Now more than ever the importance of journalistic basics have to be paramount: getting the facts right and wherever possible telling both sides of the story.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Walker added: \u2018The industry is evolving, as it must to survive, but in the avalanche of data we now have to wade through we must never forget the one thing that always stands out is that nothing beats a good story, well told.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Now the baton is being passed to a new generation of journalists and it\u2019s up to them to continue finding those great stories, to entertain, educate, inform and hold those in power to account.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Embarking on his distinguished career, after school Walker joined the <em>Ellesmere Port News<\/em> before progressing to the <em>Wolverhampton Express and Star<\/em> and the <em>Birmingham Post.<\/em> He graduated to Fleet Street from 1980 as an award-winning reporter for the <em>Daily Mail<\/em>, followed by senior executive positions at the <em>Daily Express<\/em>, <em>Sunday Mirror<\/em>, and <em>Daily Telegraph<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At the <em>London Evening Standard<\/em>, he advanced from news editor to senior deputy editor, during which the paper earned the Newspaper of the Year accolade and multiple awards for its groundbreaking campaigns. In this capacity, he oversaw the integration of print operations with digital platforms.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently he switched from print to digital to serve for seven years as executive editor of <em>MailOnline<\/em>, managing global news coverage for a UK and <strong>i<\/strong>nternational audience of 24.7million monthly unique visitors. Hanging up his Fleet Street hat this summer, he recently joined Hanover Communications as a senior advisor.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert Jobson<\/strong>, co-chair of the London Press Club Ball who worked alongside Walker at the <em>Express<\/em> and <em>Standard<\/em>, paid tribute to a \u2018brilliant news man of the old school\u2019 who inspired great loyalty from his reporting team:<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Ian Walker is regarded as one of the finest news men of his generation, with more than 50 years of experience in journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He always went that extra mile to get the story, to get it right and to get it first.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Ball co-chair and Daily Mail motoring editor <strong>Ray Massey<\/strong> who worked with him at the Mail said: \u2018Ian is a journalist\u2019s journalist and a master of our rumbustious trade.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A consummate professional, he is always calm and rational but with an unerring and intuitive nose for a good story and a sharp eye for an angle. He will also trust a reporter\u2019s hunch and follow through.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>London Press Club chairman <strong>Doug Wills<\/strong> described him as a \u2018titan of journalism.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Award winning reporter and author <strong>Shekhar Bhatia<\/strong>, who worked with Walker at Mailonline, the Express, and Standard, said: \u2018He is a modest man. But there isn&#8217;t a newsman to compare in our era.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He follows in the footsteps of previous recipients who include: former Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre (now editor-in-chief of Associated Newspapers) ; pioneering woman journalist Eve Pollard (Lady Lloyd); broadcaster Nick Ferrari; Sun royal photographer Arthur Edwards; and last year\u2019s recipient, former The People editor Bill Hagerty, who also attended this year\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thanks to the generosity of sponsorship partners St James\u2019s House (SJH), the Ball also raised \u00a325,000 for good causes linked to journalism.<\/strong> This was split three ways this year: \u00a310,000 to the <strong>Journalists\u2019 Charity<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/journalistscharity.org.uk\/\">https:\/\/journalistscharity.org.uk\/<\/a>); \u00a310,000 to the <strong>London Press Club<\/strong> (including \u00a35,000 from Journalist Laureate\u2019s bursary donated at his discretion) to help fund future events and initiatives; and \u00a35,000 to the <strong>Guild of Motoring Writers\u2019 Benevolent Fund<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gomw.co.uk\/benevolent-fund\/\">https:\/\/www.gomw.co.uk\/benevolent-fund\/<\/a> ).<\/p>\n<p>Ball co-chairs Ray Massey and Robert Jobson said: \u2018We\u2019d like to sincerely thank Richard Freed, Craig Vye, Emily Herman and all the team at our partners St James\u2019s House (SJH) for their support and generosity in making the Ball possible and for their \u00a325,000 donation to support good causes linked to journalism.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Walker attended with his wife Annie who, as <strong>Annie Leask<\/strong>, was a leading Fleet Street reporter and feature writer.<\/p>\n<p>There was also a strong automotive presence, including guests and sponsors linked to the <strong>Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts\u2019 Club<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/rrec.org.uk\/\">https:\/\/rrec.org.uk\/<\/a> ) celebrating the launch of their annual yearbook. Journalists from the <strong>Guild of Motoring Writers<\/strong> and executives from car firms including <strong>Renault, Dacia<\/strong> and rapidly expanding Chinese electric car-maker <strong>BYD <\/strong>were also present<strong>.<\/strong> VIP transport was generously provided by car firm <strong>Genesis Motor Europe<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.genesisnewseurope.com\/\">https:\/\/www.genesisnewseurope.com\/<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s celebration marked the 20<sup>th<\/sup> London Press Club Ball since the \u2018fun and fundraising\u2019 event was revived in 2005, and is the 11<sup>th<\/sup> overseen by Ball co-chairs Robert Jobson and Ray Massey, who have so-far helped raise around \u00a3250,000 for charitable
