{"id":1153,"date":"2024-11-25T10:54:06","date_gmt":"2024-11-25T10:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1153"},"modified":"2025-07-29T12:03:12","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T11:03:12","slug":"tales-of-legal-battles-behind-the-literary-story-on-the-barclay-twins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1153","title":{"rendered":"Tales of legal battles behind the literary story on the Barclay twins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the London Press Club heard from journalist author <strong>Jane Martinson<\/strong> how her dogged determination secured publication of her book on the Barclay twins.<\/p>\n<p>There were legal pressures and warnings at many stages of her research on the story of how the twins rose from poverty to become proprietors of the <em>Telegraph<\/em> and the <em>Spectator<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Martinson &#8211; \u00a0former <em>Guardian<\/em> Media Editor, \u00a0now columnist and Professor of Financial Journalism at City University &#8211; \u00a0was talking at the second literary evening to be held by the London Press Club at L\u2019Escargot\u2019s Snail Club in Greek Street.<\/p>\n<p>Her book \u201c<em>You may never see us again: The Barclay Dynasty\u201d <\/em>has recently been published in paperback after a successful launch.<\/p>\n<p>It chronicles how the Barclay twins, with almost no formal education, built first a property then a hotel business, before becoming proprietors of two of the most prestigious titles in British media.<\/p>\n<p>Martinson was interviewed by Press Club chairman <strong>Doug Wills <\/strong>at the event which was held in association with the <strong>Stationers and Newspaper Makers Livery Company<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In October, the London Press Club held a literary evening when <em>London Standard<\/em> editor <strong>Dylan Jones<\/strong> spoke about his recently published memoir \u201cThese Foolish Things\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the London Press Club heard from journalist author Jane Martinson how her dogged determination secured publication of her book on the Barclay twins.
