{"id":1135,"date":"2024-10-21T15:03:16","date_gmt":"2024-10-21T14:03:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1135"},"modified":"2025-07-29T12:03:24","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T11:03:24","slug":"2023-24-award-winners-announced-at-sell-out-awards-lunch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/londonpressclub.co.uk\/?p=1135","title":{"rendered":"2023-24 Award winners announced at sell-out Awards Lunch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>By Maryam Kara, trainee journalist\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Winners of this year\u2019s London Press Club Awards were announced on Wednesday at a lunchtime awards ceremony packed with 150 of Britain\u2019s top journalists from national newspapers and broadcasters.<\/p>\n<p>Awards ranged from\u00a0<strong>Journalist of the Year\u00a0<\/strong>for the\u00a0<em>Standard<\/em>\u2019s court correspondent\u00a0<strong>Tristan Kirk<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>Newspaper of the Year<\/strong>\u00a0for\u00a0<em>The Sun<\/em>, while\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>\u00a0won\u00a0<strong>Sunday newspaper of the Year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1137\" style=\"width: 441px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1137\" class=\"wp-image-1137\" src=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2024\/10\/21145850\/ly25_16-10-24_Press_Awards-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"431\" height=\"287\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1137\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doug Wills, London Press Club chair, broadcaster Riz Lateef and broadcaster Nick Ferrari.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Chair of the judges\u00a0<strong>Nick Ferrari<\/strong>, who presented the awards alongside Press Club chairman\u00a0<strong>Doug Wills\u00a0<\/strong>and BBC London&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Riz Lateef<\/strong>, said: \u201cGiven the seismic events both at home and abroad over the past 12 months, it was fair to hope for a good crop of entries for the awards &#8211; but it turned out to be exceptional. We had a record number of [them].&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Press Club Awards lunch was held at Stationers\u2019 Hall near St Paul\u2019s where speakers commemorated journalists across the globe who have reported on major stories amid conflicts and war. Reverend Canon Dr. Alison Joyce held a &#8220;moment of silence\u201d to thank them for the things &#8220;we take for granted\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It followed the\u00a0<strong>Edgar Wallace Award<\/strong>\u00a0given posthumously to the late\u00a0<em>Independent<\/em>\u00a0reporter\u00a0<strong>Kim Sengupta<\/strong>, who covered most of the main battlefronts over a career that spanned decades.<\/p>\n<p>A further ten awards were then presented for a host of categories including Political Journalist of the Year for\u00a0<strong>Tim Shipman<\/strong>, of the\u00a0<em>Sunday Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>The Times<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 his columns are &#8220;an essential read for those who want to know what is going on behind the scenes in politics&#8221;, said the judges.\u00a0He was presented with \u00a31,500 by\u00a0<strong>Lord Salisbury<\/strong>\u00a0who sponsored the award. \u00a0.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tristan Kirk\u2019<\/strong>s award came after his investigation into a secretive court process dubbed \u201cconveyor belt justice\u201d and his work that shone a light on the single justice procedure system. It has seen vulnerable people dealt with by the courts without proper scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI hope this award helps to further shine a light on that and convince people to change the system for the better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other recipients included BBC\u2019s\u00a0<strong>Mishal Husain<\/strong>\u00a0who won\u00a0<strong>Broadcaster of the Year<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Daily Telegraph\u2019<\/em>s\u00a0<strong>Oliver Brown<\/strong>, who received the award for\u00a0<strong>Sport Journalist of the Year<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Multi-media journalist of the Year\u00a0<\/strong>went to\u00a0<strong>Aggie Chambre\u00a0<\/strong>from\u00a0<em>LBC<\/em>\u00a0for political exclusives, as\u00a0<strong>Young Journalist of the Year<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; presented with a prize of \u00a31,000 donated by\u00a0<strong>The Journalists\u2019 Charity<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; went to\u00a0<strong>Eirian Prosser<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<em>MailOnline<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Londoner of the Year Award<\/strong>, which is given annually by the Press Club, was announced as England and Arsenal \u00a0football star\u00a0<strong>Bukayo Saka.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1145\" src=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2024\/10\/24110643\/LDN_PRESS_CLUB_JUDGES_2024_01.pdf-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2024\/10\/24110643\/LDN_PRESS_CLUB_JUDGES_2024_01.pdf-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2024\/10\/24110643\/LDN_PRESS_CLUB_JUDGES_2024_01.pdf-1280x905.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2024\/10\/24110643\/LDN_PRESS_CLUB_JUDGES_2024_01.pdf-980x693.jpg 980w, https:\/\/londonpressclub1.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/media\/2024\/10\/24110643\/LDN_PRESS_CLUB_JUDGES_2024_01.pdf-480x339.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) and (max-width: 1280px) 1280px, (min-width: 1281px) 2560px, 100vw\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Maryam Kara, trainee journalist\u00a0 Winners of this year\u2019s London Press Club Awards were announced on Wednesday at a lunchtime awards ceremony packed with 150 of Britain\u2019s top journalists from national newspapers and broadcasters.
