Do we get the politicians we deserve? March 31 debate at City University

Do we get the politicians we deserve? That’s the question the London Press Club and City University will be asking onMarch 31, just over a month before the General Election.

With increasingly disenchantment, are the politicians or the system to blame? And how much fault lies with the public itself for not getting more involved, whether by attending council meetings, backing investigative journalism or just making the effort to vote. The Do we get the politicians we deserve? event will also explore apathy, asking whether it’s a lack of knowledge about civic institutions, frustrations based on past experience or just laziness.

The debate, to be held at the university’s St John Street campus on Tuesday March 31 at 6.30pm, will be chaired by City professor of journalism andGuardian columnist Roy Greenslade. The panel will include, subject to work commitments: Heather Brooke, City journalism professor and award-winning journalist behind the MPs’ expenses scandal; Stephen Bush, formerly of theTelegraph and now editor of the New Statesman’s Staggers political blog; Michael Crick, Channel 4 News political correspondent and PSA journalist of the year; Anne McElvoy, public policy editor for The Economist and Evening Standard columnist; and Steve Richards, broadcaster and chief political columnist for The Independent
